if you're behind a router, you will probably need port forwarding.

Much easier to just turn on the server built into osx.

hahaha, I just set this up the other night:

If your home computer is behind a router, forward port 5900 only. Under the Sharing pane inside System Preferences, choose the ARD (apple remote desktop) setting under Services then when the window pops up, choose "VNC viewers may control screen with password. Set a password in there and use it when connecting with the VNC client.

For Windows I recommend WinVNC. I used to use TridiaVNC but they've discontinued it and I haven't found a good release in a while.
