Well I'm heading off to college in the fall and while at orientation I saw the Dell Latitude D610 they offered with the following options. Pentium M 760 2.00 GHz, 14.1 SXGA+, ATI Radeon X300 64 MB, 1 GB SDRAM, 80 GB HD, XP Pro, gigabit ethernet, 8X DVD+/-RW, Wireless LAN, 6 cell batt, 3 yr complete warranty, free 128 MB mem stick. $1851.

I'm fine with the price and the specs look great to me, just wondering if anyone has had experience with this model and any other suggestions.

    Thanks.

it's a piece of shit that has horrible quality, poor fit and finish, and under-performs what a system of those specs *should* be at.

I get the feeling you will never like any dell products.

I will like dell products as soon as they make something decent.

I hated ford until 2004... The new F-150 is at least a respectable truck.

Recommendations? Simply remember if its not Jollyogres idea or not his favorite brand he says it's trash... SOMETIMES he's right, USUALLY he is just being over dramatic...

In my experience and many hundreds of thousands others are that Dell's are good machines. Personally I own two, my company has bought hundreds and we are very happy with them...

I wouldn't recommend a Dell either, and not just to side with Jolly, but Dells are usually of horrible quality. I've said it time and time again, Dells have the highest return rate percentage on laptops in the world.

That itself SHOULD tell you something.

I'd honestly go with an Asus laptop or a Fijitsu. If you don't want those, then I'd probably start looking at Toshiba's or IBM's

I have a Dell and Im happy with it. It has been through a lot of hard times (being dropped, slammed, dropped more, etc.) and works flawlessly. Just put 1GB of RAM in there and I should be getting my P4 installed soon also so it will be fine for what I use it for... if you're looking to play games on laptops, its gonna cost ya, otherwise laptops are worthless for most games

Again proof? Sounds more like a bandwagon...

Junk = PackardBell, done gone. Dell the biggest.

Don't get me wrong, Dell is not the best but its not the worst as you stated. It's impossible to fit the median and please the extremes.

It actually is correct. Dell has the highest return rate in the world, last year it was up to 26%. I could do research and find it for you. But, I think you're a big boy and you are definatly capable of doing your own research.

Edit: Oh, and these are laptop sales. Not desktop.

dell sells significantly more units than the more expensive IBM, of course it is going to have a higher repair rate

PS is there an updated chart?

Repair rate is a percentage and has nothing to do with units sold.

I searched PC Magazine's site for "reader survey" and that's the newest one I could come up with quickly. They just published one so you might search recent issues.

    PERCENTAGES are units_repaired/units_sold

For example, a company that sells 1,000 units:

    100/1,000 = 10%

a company that sells 1,000,000 units:
    100,000/1,000,000 = 10%

So the larger company and smaller company sell vastly different quantities, but have the same return rate. Dell sells a lot, but has a HORRIBLE return rate. Which provides further evidence to my "got too big" theory. :mamoru:

This chart is lacking a proper description. In terms of notebooks needing a repair, dell does better than IBM, but has a lower reliability rating. HP does better than apple in % repairs needed for laptops less than one year old, yet gets below average reliability while apple gets well above average?

The d610 is a great laptop when value is considered. I have worked with the d-series at my office for the past 2 years and the only bad things I have to say is dell's tech support, and unisys. The laptops are decent, but fit, finish, and solidity feeling are better on brands like ibm.
