Are they respected photogs? Is it harder work than it looks? Is it even possible to get in the industry?

if its a field you want to get in and stay in, then im sure you can do well. But if you do that and want to get bigger clients down the road and stop doing porn, i think you would be considered tainted.

at the very least looked down upon

Porn is like anything else. You're respected if your work stands out. If you're a generic piece of shit wedding photographer, you aren't respected. If you're a great one, you are, same thing with porn.

Plus, it all depends on what you call porn... Art nudes I would consider different from porn (although I don't make the bullshit distinction that art nudes shouldn't be sexually arousing) and those guys can make good money, but often don't, but are respected by pretty much everyone.

As for actual porn, most of the "photographers" are guys who made a website and have an XXXD with the kit lens and shoot in auto during normal porn shoots, they get paid, but not from the photos. This also precludes you, because they aren't going to pay someone to do the same thing they think they can do with auto, so make your own site or don't try getting in on this level. They also pretty much always use a fake name.

After that you have semi-pros who do dedicated model shoots for a website where they do all of the setup and have a good amount of creative control. They get paid, but not nearly enough to live on. Very hard to get into this level, you either have to know people or be able to convince a guy from the first level that you can give him better results than he can. These guys use fake names too.

After that you have good, solid, professional photographers who know what they're doing and probably could do other work if they wanted to. These guys work regularly for places like met-art and femjoy, but do top-tier talent shoots too. These guys make a good bit, but depending on your demand, it still might not be enough to live on and can be very hard to get into. These guys often use their real names and I believe it's fairly easy to switch over from femjoy style shots to normal everyday work.

Lastly you have Playboy level photographers, usually seasoned vets of photography, they make a ton of money, use their real names, and are respected for it. There's a ton more money here than in art nudes, but there's somewhat less legitimacy as well, but they can still flip over to commercial work easily. You don't get in on this level without being someone beforehand though.

Porn is a fun idea, but like turbodude said, you need to be all the way in or never get started. Use a fake name if you do, you wont build a portfolio for your actual name, but if you ever get tired of it you can start over.

I wouldn consider that porn, nor do i consider Playboy porn. I am impressed by both Playboy and SG, except i do not agree with SG photo agreement

When i think porn i think a couple looking like they are getting it on or actually getting it on.
