i know you can obviously get one if you have a legit photography job for a magazine/tv station/newspaper/etc ... but is there a way for a regular joe (or a regular A.C. in my case) to get one?

just thought it would be badass to take photos at Memorial Stadium of the Huskers or womens volleyball or something like that. :dunno:

If your photos make it nowhere outside of your computer, no one will give you shit.

For concerts, getting in contact with a band's management is the best way of going about getting a press pass.

I shoot for my school's newspaper. I'm the assistant photo editor, so I just call and tell them I am with the paper - even if it's for my own use.

Get hooked up with a website and offer you services for a nominal fee - that's probably the easiest way to get into it. Once you build a portfolio, it gets easier to make contacts. But the portfolio will let you do a lot.

You have to be careful though - you need to know what you can and can't do with a press pass - if you step over you boundaries, the person who got you your press pass will look bad and it will be unlikely that you ever get to shoot for them again. It's really all about who you know/ who knows you.

from what i've heard, most media relations people would want to see some of your work if you're freelance. otherwise, what would the venue benefit from giving you free tickets and sideline seats if you're just going to use the photos for your own enjoyment?

Depends on the venue. I've bought tickets for smaller mens NCAA games, and just sit on the bleachers behind the hoop. With my camera and white lens on it, no one says anything to me about being where I was. Of course I wasnt sitting on the floor where the legit photographers were, but it was just as good.

It's an idea for you if you want to get some practice in. I don't know about Nebraska, you might have to go to some division II schools

You basically need a legitimate and creditable source of who you are working for or doing. Basically a known and trustworthy... well sorta, media company. Dunno if it'll work for a concert, knowing someone helps, but for all the car media sites I got access for my website helped, doubt that'll work anymore for concerts and real life non-internet things now.

    thanks a lot!

that's fucking genius, im gonna have my buddie photographer compare it to his boxing press passes see if it looks reasonable, if it does im gonna use it for shit and giggles, even though I don't really need it.
