or any search engine for that matter. I'm reading about big companies like Microsoft are in a frenzy to purchase other search engines because they either 1) want the technology 2) eliminate them and acquire their market share.

Google in particular has remained at the summit of popularity ever since they've debut 5 years ago. Advertisers are flocking to them no doubt and their technology is transferrable to Fortune 500 companies who want to utilize it internally, BUT the burning question is after all that. How can a company who's basically built around a simple idea, to make searches fast and accurate be worth Biillions of dollars !?

What are their other revenue streams?

when you do a search for omething you'll notice one or two searches at the very top highlighted. Companies pay BIG BUCKS, and i mean BIG $$ for that. + every business that is out there to make money. In order for them to get listed in searches they have to pay $ as well.

I thought google praised itself for not selling spots in search results?

I know the highlighted ones are obviously payed for....but to be #1 in "four foot double ended black dildos" cannot be baught can it?

if you have a business and you want to add your name to search results in order to make money it's like a law you have to pay. I read it on yahoo which is google essentially. They also have the "sponsored" links that is usually on the right side of the searches.

There is controversy with some of the searching thing though. It's called "Adwords" i think. $ As of right now you kinda can buy yourself in but the best content still usually wins over.

"Google's complex, automated methods make human tampering with our results extremely difficult. And though we do run relevant ads above and next to our results, Google does not sell placement within the results themselves (i.e., no one can buy a higher PageRank). A Google search is an easy, honest and objective way to find high-quality websites with information relevant to your search."

Adwords are on the right though. They are not in the main search results. I personally never even check those out knowing they're just advertisements.

I manage a $1-2k/month search engine budget... You cannot buy ranking in the main search results on Google nor will you ever be able to. Premium spots on Google (highlighted ads above the main results) cost a minimum of $5k per month. Adwords are cheaper and on the side. Google has sold it's technology before through its "Search Appliance" program. I think they're also planning for an IPO.

I don't remember the exact quote, but I could swear Bill Gates has touched upon that idea and thats why Microsoft is run the way it is. He knows full well someone with the smarts and timing can pull the rug out from Microsoft (this was back in the early days).

Interesting. The guy who said it in the movie was playing Bill Gates.
