I have a scale that claims to know what my bf is. How accurate is this thing?
mirror, i'm not competing.
It's not about competing, it's about knowing if I am losing fat or muscle as I am dieting.
tape measure, calipers
Unless you're using a dunk test, the mirror is going to be way more accurate.
Go by your strength. If you are losing strength, then u are losing muscle (losing some muscle is unavoidable).
Here are some good indicators to go by.
Pay attention to your shoulders--they should be getting more striated as your diet goes on.
Next your chest will start becoming more striated
Top abs, they will be the first to come in. Depending on where you are at now, look for when you can see the outline of the TOP of your top two abs (as in a seperation b/w your top abs and your stomach above/around them.)
Vascularity. As you lean up, you'll notice new veins, and previously visible veins becoming more visible. Good ones to look for first: biceps vein, vein in calves and forarms. Ones that become visible as you gain moderate leanness: Veins in your lats (looking at lats in the mirror from the front).
Once you start to get really lean: veins in lower abdomen. I know below 14% i have one lower ab vein, at about 10% i get two (one on each side) at about 8% i have 3 (one side branches) at 7 or less i have 4.
I'm sure there are a million other visual indicators, but if you are maintaining strength (within 5% or so) and seeing these changes, you are on the right track.
I ordered some calipers off Amazon for 15 bucks and the fucking things got lost in the mail so I have to re-order them. I gotta get my diet more regimented so i can get 10lbs of muscle on and 10lbs of fat off before July.
I'm going to disagree with you here chief. You can maintain strength and lose muscle. My squat and DL usually go up 10-20lbs when I drop weight, and I suck at keeping muscle.
Sigh, lol from your diet thread to something like this, thank god someone understands basic science at least. below is all you need with a mirror if you're not competing.
Im down 10 pounds FTW.
Just jumped on my roommate's body fat scale and it said 18% FFFFFFFFFFFfffuuuuuuuuuuuu
The electric impedance scales aren't accurate because they change based on how hydrated you are.
I'm always really hydrated. Drinking my 5th liter of water today. Would that make me seem fatter?
I just throw numbers out there randomly. The last person I talked to about it I said I was 85%.
nm I chugged 2 liters of water and it told me i was 20.5%
I don't think this is necessarily true.
I get in a pool of water. If I float, I'm still too fat.
nope. electronic scales work by measuring impedance in your body. water doesn't really add impedance, but fat does. or if you have clothing on, that will jack up your bf reading.
I get a hardon, pull my dick up into my stomach and if I can hide it in my fat rolls I'm at about 25%, If I tuck it down and it stays down on it's own, I'm about 35.
If I can't even see it anymore, I'm at about 6.
Well that was gay.
