ammo box? keep them all in the original boxes?

any negative to storing all ammo in separate ammo boxes? (even stuff you buy from stores, like WWB and shit). should you put in it a silica pack?

    In for a good answer.

I usually buy .223 in bulk so it's in ammo cans, but all my .22lr and handgun ammo is sitting in the cardboard boxes that it comes in (wwb, blazer brass, etc...) and is stacked up on the shelf.

In my safe (equipped with golden rod) either in ammo cans or on the shelf.

I know it's not the best place, and proves how little I have, but I have it on the top shelf in my safe.

more or less, is it going to degrade the ammo faster than in a box it came in (specifically 22LR and 9mm

I got about 8 ammo boxes, and am just tired of having so many goddamn boxes of ammo to stack up. plus I just think in a SHTF scenario, would be a lot easier re-loading than having to unload individual boxes. just don't want to ruin any ammo.

You really have to work hard to ruin ammo.

Factory ammo gets put in ammo cans by the box, reloads go into ammo cans, usually loose.

Granted, I don't keep huge stashes of ammo, so I cycle through my inventory every few months.

I keep in box they came in and toss on the shelf. Although, I fill all mags to capacity just in case.

I have a huge toolbox to store mine right now, until I can get some more room. Original boxes with some silica packets as I find them in packages to throw on top.

Alot are loaded in mags, more are in ammo cans, commercial stuff is in its box inside ammo cans, reloads are loose in ammo cans, stuff that comes in a wood crate stays in the crate, same with cardboard cases I haven't opened yet.

GI magazines w/magpul followers 10 per pelican case this sets next to the rifle for serious zombie shtf run away with the rifle situations. You can even run a sling on your pelican to grab it and go.

Then I've packs of 200-400 rounds of match ammo in original boxes in a heavy sealed plastic bag. These sit on the shelf under my rifle rack and do not ever get touched.

Everything else is shelf or in my range toolbox. You should use a first in first out system to make sure you are cycling through your ammo and then maintain a small stock of stuff that is sealed up and never goes anywhere.

I think if you are worried about long term storage a good sealed plastic container is the way to go. Pelican is probably ideal, ammo cans will rust out, and then you're looking at potential issues 50 years from now. If nothing else throw your shit in some zip locks and dump them in a 5 gallon bucket. You can get the kits that seal up for storing mass quantities of food (usually wheat) throw in some silca packs and that shit will last forever. 5 gallon bucks also don't yell, grab me I'm valuable like a ammo can with 50 cal written on the side.

I'm also a big fan of not storing all your ammo or guns in the same place. If you get robbed they'll take everything in your ammo closet/safe. If you have some random magazines in each closet and a few boxes in the attic you'll have ammo for the first night in your newly robbed house, when you are freeking out. In a disaster you may not be able to get ammo at all even if you have money.

Ammo cans, although I did run a couple rounds through my washer and dryer last week.

They shot fine, even though they were plinker reloads.
