Total noob on this stuff here guys, but I have been wondering this for a while. Basically I have a new computer coming in on the 29th, its a P4 550 3.4ghz (800 fsb) with a 6800 GT 256mb PCIe card. this, to me, is a monster power computer that will rip games a new asshole, but I was just wondering if overclocking would get me noticably better results.

I dont know how to do it though, is there a download program that you have to get to do this? or are there settings you can alter to do it? Also, once its done how do I know its working, and how do i know im not gonna set my comp on fire?

Thanks in advance OT, be specific, big words confuse newbies :wtc:

You should learn to optimize your system instead - that will almost always get you better results and there's no chance of destroying anything that you can't get back.

Ditto on the above. If you're buying a machine to overclock, why not just buy a faster processor in the first place and be done with it? If you insist, I hope you have a very good heatsink/fan for it.

    The ultimate guide to overclocking:

    1) if you had to ask, you shouldn't be doing it.

Overclocking is like modding a Honda with I/H/E; the results are not enough to justify doing it in the first place.

I totally disagree. Overclocking is well worth it in my opinion.

Ok thanks guys, I really am not familiar with alot of this kind of stuff, I cant even build my own computer :ugh: so I didnt know if it was just a matter of downloading a program and changing settings. I figured with OTs help I might be able to do it, but I agree, my machine should eat current games alive so it doesnt *need* to be done.

More info on this optimizing your system though, I dont follow.

Games performance is based on video card performance, RAM, HD speed and bus performance. The choke point is not the CPU speed.

    How?!

God, you people. I do a search in Google and I get a load of pages with software that doesn't work and FAQs that don't answer newbie questions. I do a search on OT and get a bunch of replies like "Do a search." Have you guys ever tried your own advice and done a search? Please do. Type in overclock* and see what you get.

With that said, where can I find a newbie guide to overclocking my ATI Radeon 9000 Pro video card? The best software to clock it? And the next step? How to safely overclock without having to invest in fans? Please and thank you.
