I was looking at this lens at the camera shop tonight (where I bought my 20D, and basically all my photo gear) and I can get it for a little more than $500 after rebate. The Canons were a little too high price for my taste atm.. :o

wow, i think this will be my 3rd lens after I get a 70-200L. I can't afford the $1200 for a 16-35L. I don't shoot wide angle that much anyways

The Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 is a nice lens as well. I owned that one and my friend owned both the 18-50 and the 17-35 at some point. The 17-35mm f/2.8-4 is a very sharp lens (at least his copy was) but the 18-50 was pretty close.

    Pros of the 18-50:
    longer on the long end
    contant apature
    cheaper

    Cons:
    not was wide
vignetting problem at wide open apatures on the short end
    needs a thin filter

Both are fabulous lenses though. :o

Do you need f/2.8 on the wide end ?

Why not get the 17-40mm f/4 others seem to love :dunno:

    :dunno:

The 17-40mm f/4 probably costs more new or used, but in the end figure out which lenses are the ones you use most of the time.

Spend your money there instead of having 9849383 overlapping all-around lenses :dunno:

btw, I'm really enjoying the 12-24mm

When I owned my 18-50mm I used it mostly above 28mm and usually at full telephoto.. So I sold it and kept my 28-75m :o When did you get the 12-24? :eek3:

    Pics? :x:

Because I want the wide angle, and the larger aperture. Thats why ;) f4 isn't cutting it for me, and neither is 28mm on my 20D, I need something wider.

Wider than 28mm on my camera. Plus I don't want to shell out over a grand for a 10mm atm...Unless someone has a good wider anlge with a larger aperture that they like?

It's ok. It is slow and noisy to focus for sports though.

    I wish I had got a 17-40 F4 though.

I am trying to decide between the 17-40L and the 17-35 Tamron right now also. One of them is on my short list to replace my kit lens. I use my 70-200 f/4L a good bit outdoors with no problems at all but I see myself needing a faster wide angle than the kit lens (3.5 at the wide end) for indoor shots so the Tamron may win. Of course, my 50 f/1.8 gets used a lot indoors so I may not need a fast wide as much as I think. Ahh decisions, decisions. If I was rich I would get both!

i pretty much got the lens for low light situations at car shows on stage or possibly in the clubs. the image quality is on par with the 17-40 f/4 and was cheaper so it was a no brainer for me. as far as 17mm not being wide enough, i agree, which is why im waiting for the newer crop of sigma 10mm to whatever and tamron 11mm to whatever lenses to come out.
