My dad gave me the gun I'm using for everyday carry in my truck. I need to get it registered to me but not sure how. My dad bought it a while ago, not sure if its even registered to him at all:dunno:

I think there's some law about giving one as a gift to a family member, and it probably varies from state to state, but I'd say the only sure way to ensure it's legal in your state is to go to a gun store with your dad and have them do a FFL transfer.

What I'm saying though is that I don't think it was ever registered to him. Do I stil just go to teh gun store and say, "I'd like to register this gun?":dunno:

I have my CHL. I believe the handgun is supposed to be registered to me. At least thats how I interpret what I've read in the CHL booklet.

personal opinion: take this handgun, and clean it, and put it away, hidden. dont get it out when they come for your guns. buy a new handgun for truck carry.

legal advice: consult your local law enforcment if you want to do "the right thing"

How to register a handgun, by Joe Cool

Step 1: Move to a state that has better gun laws and doesn't require registration. (NM, for example, has a constitutional provision that no municipality can pass laws more restrictive than the State laws).

    Step 2: Buy your gun.

    Step 3: Don't register it.

    Step 4: Profit

After thinking about it some more I think this is what I'll do. Current gun is a Colt 1911 Officer's. I think I'll save for a bit, buy a new 1911, and keep the old one at the house.

'They' will have a hard time finding any of my guns if I have any idea that 'they' are coming to get them :squint:

good choice, although it might not be the "right thing" to do, if that gun isnt on the books, "they" wont know to ask for it
