ive been browsing flickr a lot getting ready for my africa trip and notice that some pictures are very dull while others have super vibrant colors. how do you get the colors to pop out? is it the filter? PS editing? lens?

for example the colors on this pic suck:
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/johngrudnowski/522716740/

while the colors on this pic are amazing:
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/darwishh/754888124/in/set-72157600038093826/

i can provide more pics for reference but im sure you get the idea.
what setting should i be shooting the shots to get better colors?

If you go to that first picture and look through the photographer's gallery from which that picture came, I'm gonna take a good guess and say he used a circular polarizer. There's a shot of a bush/tree in a clearing, one where the sky is dark blue then another where it's light blue. I've also noticed shooting dark areas with a CP makes everything much darker than sans CP, and you can sorta see that in the first picture you linked to.

Not really. If you look at those pics and you expect to see the same shit I wouldn't bother with a CP. It's better at saturating colors like red, blue or green. I use the shit out of mine in parks or near water with adequate lighting.

I got a cheap bastard one from Ritz, whatever their brand is. I think it was only like $25. You can do hell of a lot better though. Hoya is good shit.

    :dunno:

Simple selective color adjustment + contrast and USM

Can also be done with curves.

Dry fields, barren areas, etc. If you're going to be shooting the same stuff, you can't saturate those types of colors you'll find much more with a CP. I personally wouldn't bother with it. Any decent saturation it would provide could be matched with a quick bump up in post processing most likely.

That kind of color really doesn't come directly out of a digital camera, but it does come from software. ;)

doesn't matter if the light allows for it (loses 2 stops of light)
