I was playing with my 350D and a friend was around. He wanted to look at it and guess his first question?

"How do I turn the screen on?"

I gave a quick explaination that you have to use the viewfinder cause you get better shots, etc. He then starts giving me shit (joking) about how his A70 is better than my $600 camera. "Does it record video? Mine does." Etc.

How do you explain an SLR camera to someone like that?

You don't, you just let them continue to think their nifty bar photos on myspace look good.

ask him what his frame size is. what aperture, ISO, shutter speed, and focal distance he's shooting at.

when he says "???" you can reply "exactly."

Switch lenses from an ultra-wide, to a telephoto, then to a f1.4 prime.

Also, mount an external flash and go focus on stuff in low light instantly.

Also, review pictures the second they're taken, and flip threw old ones with a click wheel at 10/sec.

Just tell him to stick with a point and shoot that came with his gateway computer and you're good.

if they have a p&s w/ them, do this:

Tell them to focus on someone walking, and take a picture. then hand them an SLR set to continual focus, and tell them to do it again. Then show them the difference. My brother-in-law does this when customers ask him why they should get an SLR instead of a p&s. 9/10 times the customer walks out w/ the slr.

And nine times out of ten the customer has wasted his money.
Someone who doesn't know what the difference between a P&S and a DSLR is doesn't need a DSLR.

I'm not saying they need it. I'm saying it's a way of explaining the difference between them, and a handy sales techinique it seems.

    exactly, why bother explaining.

the quesiton i get all the time is this, "where is the screen, how many MPs, and can i see the shot you just took?"

try explaing to someone why you have a film SLR...

Just tell him about aperture and shutter speed.

I think of it as a "window with curtains".

Aperture = window (size can be adjusted)
Shutter speed = curtains (speed of opening and closing curtains)

to let in same amount of light if you have a smaller window (large F-stop), you need to slow down the curtain open/close speed (slower shutter speed).

Vice versa. Size of window depends on what you want for depth of field.
