So I went this past saturday and got my second tattoo. as soon as it's done I'll post pics. I was wondering...

my tattoo artist, she charged me $175 for my tattoo. How much of that $175 do they get and how much goes to the shop? I tipped her $65. She always seems surprised when we tip her and asks if we are sure we want to give her that much, but i figure $65 is normal tip for $175 of an artists time and work :dunno:

artists, much like hair stylists, rent out seat space/studio room per month, the money they make on tattos go to 'rent' and the rest is their own to use....usually.

I try to tip around 50%, but my artist is very well known locally and has a long waiting list which I get in nicely on. My last job was around $500, I gave him 275 or so.

nah, she does an awsome job. since my wife and I both goto her for our tattoos she lets us call in appointments without putting down a deposit or anything so I like to give her a good tip.

    very rarely.

most shops have a base fee and the artist gets a cut of whatever goes over that. depending on who buys supplies and whatnot.

it all varies. an owner can make more money taking a cut per tattoo.

ive only ever heard of the artist getting half of what the cost of the tattoo is, a couple of my old customers were all artists and they never really mentioned anything about tips being a big source of income, just that they kept half the price charged.
