I have done everything, from Dc++ to Torrents, but never got into IRC.

What the fuck is going on, and what the fuck am I missing?

    How does it work?

IRC is a pain in the ass if you're using it for filesharing. It's almost too decentralized to be useful, with many of the web based search engines either going offline or being inaccurate or malicious. If you do come across a good channel and find an fserv with a file you like then you need to wait in a queue for a download slot. If you get disconnected in the middle of your transfer and don't notice until it's too late to auto-resume, then you're at the end of the queue again.

In terms of speed, I'd rank:

Newsgroups > Private BT > IRC > Public BT

    In terms of selection:

Private BT ~ Public BT > Newsgroups > IRC

or you can just use google and rapidshare.. find anything you want easy and with rapidshare's fast and stable transfer rates. Anymore IRC is a more of a hassle than it is worth for file sharing.
