I'm looking for a home surround sound receiver for my new big screen. What features are MUST HAVES? I know sound quality is not rated by wattage so what's a good amount of wattage when it comes to watching movies? 400? 500? More? Less?

Is discreet circuitry really that noticeable? How big a difference is 5.1 vs. 6.1 surround?

    thanks for the space :)

Power output kinda depends on your speaker setup. I would figure out your max budget first, then figure out the receiver/speaker setup.

well so far I have the Mitsu WS55511 big screen in mind and the room its going in is pretty damn big. Honestly I hope I don't have to spend no more than $400 for a nice receiver.

Are the Onkyos, Harmon Kardon and Carver still the creme de le creme'?

Any of those brands would work well. Also Denon and Yamaha are well regarded.

If you are willing to spend another 100 dollars, you can get the outlaw audio reciver, which from what I hear is a damn good piece of equipment...
