How do I properly upgrade my hd in my mbp?

Starting to maxx out my 100 gb hd in my C1d mbp. Was thinking about upgrading to a 200 gb hd, but what's the proper way to do this? I've read about an app called carbon copy that theoretically should make it possible to copy my hd contents to an external drive and then back onto the new one. Has anybody done this? Does it work? I really don't want to have to reinstall all my programs.

    thanks.

Carbon Copy Cloner will do what you want but I'd recommend CopyCatX. It uses block copying instead of file copying like other apps. Because of that stuff like icon placement and every detail is retained.

Yes, Carbon Copy Cloner will do an exact copy of your HDD. I plan on doing this on my Mac Pro in the next two months.

In your case, I'd place the new laptop drive in an enclosure (or make it somehow USB/Firewire), do CCC and then install the drive.

Mac Pro is easier because I can do two HDDs.

    CCC can do block copy.
