I am a windows man through and through.
My father in law has an emac.
I just intalled 10.4.9 on it.

He doesn't know how to do anything. I can't go to him for help. He is coming to me for help.

    Okay.

I download Firefox off the net. I end up with a file called something like. firefox.dmg

The file automatically ends up on the desktop.

What is the proper way of installing it from there?

Do I move the .DMG file to the Applications folder?

Seriously, I am a little lost.

    Thanks

Double click. But you might want to just drag it to the trash. Camino is much better on OSX.

    Oh follow up question.
How do I associate all email to Thunderbird and all internet to Firefox?

When I double click it doesn't stay there on reboot. I want the Firefox symbol in the task bar on the bottom. I want him to click on it to bring it up. It is important to keep it simple.

That is why I think the Application folder is involved.

    installing from dmg.

    1) double click the dmg and it'll moust on your desktop
    2) double click on that mounted icon and it'll pop up
    3) from there, drag the file to your applications folder to install it.
    or
it'll say something like program.pkg, double click that and an installer will automatically launch.
    4) select the mounted image, and drag it to the trash (or press apple + e)
    5) delete the .dmg file

    to uninstall programs
    1) go to your applications folder
    2) drag the application you want to uninstall to your trash
    3) empty trash

*i personally prefer to use a program called AppZapper, it'll find everything associated with the installed program and delete it as well

to put the program in your dock
    1) go to your applications folder
    2) drag the application you want to your dock and put it where you'd like

    to associate internet with Firefox/Camino/Opera
    1) open up Safari
    2) go to preferences
    3) change the default web browser to whatever you want

    note:
    firefox sucks on the mac
your choices are Camino, Opera, Safari
    Firefox blows...

    dunno about thunderbird
