I have a Win 2k disc, but XP disables the setup portion. I need Win 2k for software we run here at work. Please help. I'm totally lost on this one...

You have to do a clean install, not an upgrade.

    formatting frightens me.

just wipe clean the c drive and d drive (set-up as a recovery drive factory from Compaq), and reboot from cd?

Get the network guy at your office to put a second hard drive in your computer, then install Win2000 on that. That way you can have XP and 2000 both.

...wait. You're using XP Home edition at your office?

I'm using Win 2k. I picked up a new Compaq from Best Buy w/ XP Home on it. I want it gone. I suppose I can use partition magic, but I would just as soon wipe XP off the machine.

How about keeping XP and using VNC or Virtual PC to run W2K? Are you sure the software wont run on XP?

If not, you're gonna need to format.

Looks like Compaq did a good job of saving you from yourself. If you have a non-bootable install CD for Win2000, you can copy the contents of the disc onto a folder on your hard drive, download nLite, and use it to make a bootable CD that should let you boot up, format your hard drive, and install Win2000.
