    Digitally you can do this...
If you have photoshop CS or newer, they have built in photo filter effects, if you open the layers pallet [F7], and go to the bottom of the pallet, its the half black/half white circle [new adjustment layer] click on that, from that pop-up menu click Photo Filter, and they have warming/cooling colors. Try that out, it might be what you're looking to do.

The process you're looking for is called "Cross-processing", which simulates developing film with a solution made for another type of film. There's lots of tutorials on the net about the certain tweaks you do to create this effect. It mostly relates to colour. As well, they look a little desaturated, and to either have had their contrast boosted or toned back considerably. And yeah, to get the blackness at the corners, a vignette filter was likely applied.

my nikon d40 is a digital, so i was wondering if there was a quicker way than manually editing all my pictures in photoshop, like a lens filter

digital? that makes it easier than with film.. unless you can find the right expired film, thats always fun.

anyway you could try a heavy tomacco filter. then you can splash some black paint / tape on the edges to get some vigneron.. i mean vignette.

I think it looks dumb if the photo has any inclination of modern day life. An old barn or run down place would better suit it.
