Long story short, I installed a bunch of updates and KDE4 went away. I reinstalled it, but then I couldn't type in any KDE programs -- only Pidgin, which runs on GTK, and in the terminal after I killed X11. Somehow I got the keyboard working again, but half the icons are missing and the windows have no titlebars.

At this point I'd like to re-download and reinstall the kubuntu-desktop package and all of its dependencies, but I can't figure out what set of flags will tell apt-get to stop thinking for me and to just bulldoze anything in its path.

Dammit, all my window borders and titlebars are gone. I need to get this resolved. Doesn't anyone know how to fix this?

I tried that, but it still says "0 packages to install, 0 to remove, 0 to upgrade".

Been there done that. It's something like sudo apt-get purge kubuntu-desktop or something similar. The purge will pretty much kill everything related to it as I can remember.
