When I play some vids, windows media player won't let me fast forward. I remember reading something here that said why, but I can't find it and I have searched thru the help menu on the player. Can someone help me out here?

If the index on the file is messed up (or if it doesn't have an index) then you can't. Well, you can, you just need your player to generate an index first (which mplayer does with the -idx flag).

So the player does it automatically? and index means like it file extension? like .avi, .wmv etc??

No, the index is something in an AVI file that tells the player where in the file it is. I don't really know the details of it, just that I've often gotten the "cannot seek in video - try -idx option" message in MPlayer and that after running mencoder to fix the indexes (or running MPlayer with the -idx option) it works fine.
