I really think that I should get some professional help for the way I have been feeling the past couple of weeks. I've been going through some kind of depression and it's gotten to the point that even the slightest thing makes me sad/depressed/angry/etc.

The only problem is that I feel wierd about going to the doctor because of being depressed. I know a few people who post here are on or have been on some sort of medication. How did you go about getting the help you need and was it hard for you too?

    It's just one sentence:

You show up at the doctor.

He says "what can I do for you today"
You say "I'm feeling depressed and it's interfering with my daily activities".

He will take it from there. You can just nod 'yes' or 'no' after that if you want.

he'll ask you a bunch of question, he may also refer you to a psychaitrist before giving you meds, or may start you on one, and refer you then.

yeah, doctors are pretty used to that kinda thing, its really not hard. i would recommend that you ask for referal to a pychiatrist though, for at least one visit. He can help you figure out whether medication will be a good idea (sometimes it isn't) and how it will affect you. Also, they are very helpful in this area because they help you see when you are being depressed/anxious due to depression/anxiety and when it's just normal.
Once you can learn to recognize depressive symptoms in your life, it really helps you get around it because you can sort of reason with yourself and sometimes talk yourself into feelng better (none of this out loud, at least near the doctor, or you're going to get diagnosed with problems worse than depression)
good luck, dude. trust me, you aren't alone out there, either. find a couple people with the same problems as you and you can at least go laugh at each other every once in a while. it helps, too.

Don't know if you've done this already but, you really should try and work this problem out just by talking to a therapist/friend/counselor/whatever before you turn to medication. Meds might help but you eventually become dependent and your problems get worse. thats just my opinion anyway

Same here and I'm so disappointed at what I lost in that time period. Moving forward now though and glad my sister :coolugh: helped me to get over the hump.

Call and make an appointment, tell them you are feeling depressed. That's all there is to it.

I did the same thing today, but because I think I have ADD and I can't do anything. I'm also depressed and I think I might have OCD as well. :o

Dude, I went through so many years and so much pain for not making an appointment sooner. I understand your anxiety towards seeing the doctor. I kept thinking to myself that they weren't going to help me and that they were going to think I was full of shit.

2 weeks ago I finally went to an appointment. It was so easy, and they were so nice and helpful about it all. They got me on zoloft for my social anxiety and have me set up with a therapist :wiggle:

Please, PLEASE, take that first step, don't waste anymore time.

I don't have the time or money to go to a therapist. I've talked about my problems with friends several times, but it really doesn't help in the long run.

Even if I did become dependent on medication, it has to be better than the 8-10 drinks I have whenever I've had a bad day.

EL: well, if your bp is that high, then you should do something about it.
And ps you can control your blood pressure entirely with diet. Think about it.

You're extremely young to be having high blood pressure problems.

Just got back from the doctor. He's starting me out on 10mg of Paxil and then will up my dosage to 20mg once I get used to it.

did he refer you to a counselor/psychologist/psychiatrist? if not, you might ask him to as medication is only half of the treatment. talking and learning about depression/anxiety/anything else with a professional will be a great help in learning how to deal with it. my SO started on paxil, and it obviously helped, but once she did a few sessions w/ her psych. she really did even better.
it may cost a little, but i don't think a weekly session is needed, just a time or two to let you get it all figured out.

What? Are you serious, because if you are you may be depressed because of alcoholism.

    1) Alcoholics Anonymous (Is AA for you?)
    http://www.aa.org/default/en_about_aa.cfm?pageid=4

If you do start taking anti-depressants, most of them have ill effects when combined with alcohol, especially that much alcohol. I know as my alcoholism got worse and worse, I became increasingly more and more depressed, and it would require more and more booze to make life bearable.

The whole "drinking to make myself feel better" just started a few weeks ago. That's another reason why I wanted to see a doctor. I didn't want alcohol abuse to become a serious problem.

I wouldn't be stupid enough to mix alcohol and perscription medication.

I like to approach from the rear.

Most people approach from the front. Doctors hate it when you sneak up on them.

Just ask, man... your doctor saw absolute fucking hell during his interneship/residency. Just compare your minor problem to a pussy penis, and get on with making the appointment... cause its not a big deal. I mean hey, at least he won't put his finger in your butt, right?

"Doc, I've been considering antidepressants, can you help me with that sort of thing?"

it's not any wierder than saying, "Doc, I swear, I don't know how it got up there."
