Got hired to do a few sorority events this upcoming semester. This first one was at Dave & Buster's.

I knew it would be tough to get the ambient light to match the flash exposure, but I am pretty happy with the results. The one thing I'm not happy with is how hard the direct flash is. The ceilings were way to high to bounce.

I'm open to any suggestions on how to get better pictures in a situation like this.

    Enjoy the cute chicks :noes:

use something like a better bounce card, or if you just want to buy something ready to use, pick up a demb flip-it

I put a piece of paper towel in front of my flash secured via rubber band. Thing works well.

Oh, I am using a stofen diffuser on my SB600 btw. But it was pointed directly at the subjects.

I may look into a gary fong or one of those demb reflectors.

for big areas like this you don't want something thats going to cast light in every direction, like the lightsphere, since theres nothing for said light to bounce off of.

A directional bounce, like the flip-it would be perfect in this situation.

Shots are decent. Simple, posed couples shots. Not bad. I'd like to see more of your photojournalistic style shots, though, where it's just people having fun. Those are where the $$ is.

Bounce the flash off the walls or even people to the side or behind you. Try it. You'll be amazed at the results.

I like the shots where people are actually doing something other than staring at the camera. You dont see the direct flash thing so much. But in reality, they will pay you just cause no one has red eyes. 17 I like but I thin has too much of a tight crop. I want to get a demb flip it but it looks so simple to build I just can not bring myself to buy one

The photo crew's suggestions will probably help you feel better about future shoots in similar situations, but I imagine the sorority got exactly what they were most interested in. Not art certainly, but nice keepsakes of a college dating event. If the customer is happy, take their money and run.

Colors look good. Flash (even with the omnibounce) is still too direct. Bounce card, like others have said, would have worked well.
