How can I tell if I'm gaining too much fat?

    In the last 2 weeks or so that I've been bulking, I've gained about 6 pounds of weight eating 4000 cals/day. I've also regained the strength that I lost over break. So, I weigh 154, and I can once again bench 225 five times. I am VERY impatient to get my weight back up past 160, which is why I have been bulking so fast. If I can reach 165, I will have enough mass and strength (at this rate) to start cutting fat.

    My question is, am I being too hasty? So far no one would say I am fat, but how can I tell if I'm gaining fat faster than muscle? I don't want to have a huge gut in 4 week's time. Should I reduce to 3800? Please tell me if I have not given enough information.

    I wouldn't fret about 200 cals - but I don't mind an extra bit of pudge while gaining. If you're seeing good results in packing on weight, who cares if for the last few weeks of bulking+early cutting you look a bit big. You'll have more mass and more strength in the end anyways

    In regards to 200 cals.

    200 cals / day x 7 days / week = 1400 cals a week you are worrying about.

    3500 cals / pound.

    you are worrying about a third of a pound a week. just eat, lift, sleep and try to keep that scale moving upwards.

    shit on the scale, shit on the measurements, shit on the calipers. The mirror is your friend. Do you look like you're gaining fat? if so take it down a knotch if not dont' worry about it.

    So wait, let me get this straight, you have been bulking for 2 weeks, put on 6 lbs, and your goal is 165lbs. That means at this rate you will hit it in another 2 weeks or so. So you are saying that you are gonna bulk for a month and that is it? That means that you put on maybe 2lbs of lean mass before you want to cut again, and that is being generous.

    When I take off my shirt and cringe when I look in the mirror, I know I've gained too much weight.

    Unless you are a skinny bastard I dont agree with the "eat whatever the fuck you can get your hands on" theory when bulking.

    Do you think I should aim for 170? That's a lot for 5"8, I've never weighed as much as 160 in my life.

    I started a long while back, stopped over winter break bc i had no choice, and have started again. When i started all this, I was just barely 140, so in terms of straight bulking, i will have done it for 3 months and gained 25 pounds. I was 159 when I stopped last time because of break. Then I couldn't bulk for a month; I was 148 two weeks ago. I was not intending to get much heavier than 165 in the first place. If this is unclear I will clarify later.

    Clarification: gained about 20 lbs in ~2 months, lost 11 lbs in 1.5 months, gained back 6 lbs in the last 2 weeks.

    :o You're right. I'm not used to not being skinny.

    Moreover I guess I was just looking forward to being able to cut myself into great shape. I will have reached 165 by the end of a little more than a 3-month period of bulking (not including the 1.5 month of fucking up inbetween). I guess I could hold out for 170. It was because of OT that I got this far. If you guys think I should go for 170, I will consider it.

    I'm also 5'8" and aiming to bulk to 170 then cut after that?

    Currently at 163 but I'm afraid how much bigger my gut is going to get when getting to 170 :( Seems like everything I eat just makes stomache bigger.

    I've gained about 5lbs in the past month. Unfortunately, it feels like half of it is fat. First time bulking. I'm not liking the feel of the extra fat on the body, but I'm going to keep at it for another 2 months.
