Insert boot disc = no OS found. This is either because the hard drive is dead or their is just nothing loaded onto it. If your XP disc from your other computer is not a retail computer (ie: Dell/HP/Gateway/etc...) and is the retail version of Windows (ie, not OEM) then you should have no problem loading it on this computer. I think you are allowed to load it on up to 3 computers.

If it is an OEM copy then the licence is only valid for 1 computer. If this computer has a COA (certificate of authenticity) and a serial number sticker (probably on the back/side of the tower) and you have a hard copy of the same version of Windows you could try loading it and using that serial number.

If you can in the mean time, look up that computer model and download the specific drivers for each componant off the individual manufacturer's websites.

fyi,... a recovery disk is different from an windows install disk

a recovery disk is an image of your hdd when it came from manufacturer.
it will have the OS, the drivers, and other crap software they've installed.

the install disk, on the other hand, is just the OS. you may need to install drivers separately and the other software as well.

so if you use that XP install disk,.... it's a new installation as PBSlayer said.

I don't think there is legally, you can contact HP and get a copy sent to you for around $20

look for "boot priority", "boot sequence" or something like that and set it to cdrom

Before you settle with that conclusion, pull it out and test it in another machine or an enclosure.
