I use a Mac at work, but I don't want to load any of my own music onto it. The thing is, I want to be able to play my music while at work without having to put anything. My iPhone has all my music and I have it with me all day.

Is there a way to connect via USB and play music from the iPhone through the computer to which it is connected?

My iPhone has 3.1 and I'm using iTunes 9.

Mine plugs in, detects in iTunes 9 and allows me to play music off of it.

I'm not looking for an alternative. I'm looking for a way to do it how I want to.

does itunes 9 do it via usb?

It works fine on my iphone. USB connection. iTunes automatically loads, the phone charges, and I see my songs/playlists through iTunes under my iPhone. I simply "double click" and everything is controlled/played through the computer.

does iTunes not see your phone? It should, and if it does, it should allow you to play it.

Yes, iTunes does see my phone, but here's what I see when I select the Music tab...

I tried to configure to manually manage, but then I get a message that basically says, "You can have your phone linked to only one library. If you want to link to this one, everything that's on your phone now will get erased."

Click the arrow next to ABS's iPhone, select music from there, and play. You're in the sync screen
