    I sold my 18-200 a while back, and now I have a sigma 10-20, tamron 90 f2.8, and a nikon 70-200.

I'll be doing a lot of traveling outside of the united states pretty soon (coast guard high endurance cutter ) and I'd like to bring my camera with, but sometimes I need something between the 20-70 range.

A constant f2.8 would be killer, good quality too.

I realize the 24-70 from nikon is an option, but I don't have that much money to spend.

    Dont.

My two most used lenses are my 16-35 and my 70-200. I really dont like much in the 35-70 range. Its not wide enough to look wide and not telephoto enough to look telephoto. The only lenses Id get in the middle would be fast (1.2~1.4) primes.

Id really like to have a 35/1.4
    I dont like 50mm :hs:

I think your options are basically:
    Sigma 18-50 f/2.8
    Sigma 28-70 f/2.8-4
    Sigma 24-70 f/2.8
    Tamron 17-50 f/2.8
    Tokina 16-50 f/2.8
    Nikon 24-85 f/2.8-4

Can't say I have any experience with them other than I've been looking to pick one up as well. I think i leaning towards the Sigma 18-50.

if you are on a crop body, that range is pretty useless. my 17-40 and 70-200 are by far my most used lenses. i picked up a 28-70L, but i think i've used it a total of 2 times in the past year. only reason i got it was because i got it for under 500.

you start saving up for the 'trifecta'... 14-24, 24-70, and 70-200 (which you already have). Then, you sell every other lens. :o

the 17-55/2.8 is a good lens as well, and will be cheaper than the 24-70:o.

Honestly, that's what I've been contemplating for a while now. I want to go FF later on and getting a DX lens will only be good for this camera.

    i have the old nikon 35-70 2.8 push/pull version.
    IQ is great.
AF speed is okay, but it sometimes hunts in low light.
I'd recommend it if you can find a good used one.
    If I didn't have this, I'd probably get the tamron 17-50 2.8

Nikon 17-55 f/2.8 assuming your on a crop body. 55-70 can be solved by stepping back or forward a couple steps. People are selling them cause their going to FX, you can pick up a used copy for $ 800 or less.
