and can i see which ports are using most of the bandwidth? its a linksys router.

its a home network with 6-8 computers on it through a lynksys router and hub. i think that the people in the downstairs suite might be sending a lot of stuff out on a p2p or something, but i dont know. is there anyway to check? the router is a 10/100 but the hub is 10mbps, could this affect the speed at all

basically the problem is that we just switched to cable from asdl because the internet was really slow and we got a lot of "page not found." it was fine when the cable was installed(nice and fast again), but now it is slow and unreliable like it was before. i didnt think that the adsl was the problem but they switched anyway. anyone have any insight to offer on trouble shooting this?

    thanks :)

the linksys management tools would be the only place i would think of, but in all honesty the odds of them including something like that would be like finding WMD in Iraq.

I'm sure theres a simple solution im overlooking here, but i think this posess as a good challenge to the CP community, especially us network guys.

couple questions though, are you the one paying for the cable access? Do you own the linksys router? Do you have access to the cable modem or/and the linksys router?

thanks for the quick reply. its my gfs house. i have access to the router and modem and her parents pay the bill. ive already gone into the lynksys configure page and theres nothing i can see for that kind of thing. i think if i called the isp they might be able to tell me something but id really like to skip spending an hour on hold if i dont have to

ok I would try bypassing the router first of all and seing if the internet speeds up again...if it does, someone is hogging bandwith...if it dosen't, then call your ISP and start yelling (if it's road runner, take it easy, I work there :p)

the problem with hubs is that they broadcasts packets, so whenever someoen is sending data, it floods it on all the ports, I can't see that being a big concern here (10mbitsps / 8 = 1.25mbyes/s which is fast, but depending on the computers connected you can divided to get an average expected speed if everyone's on...(correct me if I am wrong, thats what my cisco teacher told me)) , why you can try doing just to see if the latency is caused from the hub or from somewhere else is bypassing the hub, plug your computer directly into the router...in theroy this works, someone correct me if I am wrong...

as for determining whos using what bandwith, I just checked my router page, and the best thign you have is under administration/log ... it's really limited, but yuo can monitor it for 10-20 minutes and see if anyone is using p2p programs when it's really slow...

I hope my post makes sence and isin't wrong info, I am too tired :o

good call on hooking up firectly to the router, that should have been the first thing i did :o
the connection is roughly 10 times faster. i know its not the most accurate way to test bandwidth, but i dloaded an mp3 from newsgroups at 8ksec before and now im at 80+.

now then. i had tried to look in the log page before but nothing showed up, as it turns out i forgot to hit apply after i enabled it

tell me if i am wrong, but is this what blaster looks like? i seem to remember something about port 135 and the sequentially increasing ips sounds like something it would do.
    Code:
LAN IP Destination URL/IP Service/Port Number
    192.168.1.104 14.150.162.83 135
    192.168.1.104 14.150.162.82 135
    192.168.1.104 14.150.162.81 135
    192.168.1.104 14.150.162.80 135
    192.168.1.104 14.150.162.79 135
    192.168.1.104 14.150.162.78 135
    192.168.1.104 14.150.162.77 135
    192.168.1.104 14.150.162.76 135
    192.168.1.104 14.150.162.75 135
    192.168.1.104 14.150.162.74 135
