How can I check mail every few minutes without having Mail.app open?

I don't want to have the app open, as it consumes alot of resources that I need. Is there a smaller client that can make a noise or alert me when mail arrives without running the full mail.app?

Mail needs to be open for GrowlMail to work. I don't find it hogs resources at all. I always have it open, and just hide it.

Right, except you don't do what I do. I have like 7 applications open at once, and I use them all. So, when I say I need the resources, I mean it. I have 2GB of RAM and I often hit the wall.

i doubt a mail widget will free up much more than just leaving mail.app open all the time though :dunno:

Mail.app is much more complicated than a POP mail checker would be.

If you don't mind me asking, what exactly are you running that with 7 apps and 2gigs of RAM a mail app throttles your resources?

I've had a 2gb (40+ layers too) Photoshop file, Illustrator, iTunes, Adium, Transmission, Firefox and Adobe Bridge open at once with 2.5gb of RAM and it would only occasionally pause or stutter. I've since added another 1gb and don't get those problems anymore.

I write web based statistical software, and run a business associated with doing so.

    Eclipse (major resource hog)
    Web Server
    MySQL
    Excel
    Adium
    Pages
    Terminals
    Address Book
    Colloquy
Firefox with tons of JS executing (whore)
    Mail.app

Alot of times, if I fuck up and open photoshop, I'm in for 5 minutes of lag.

    etc.

Are you constantly using all those together? You can't kill Address Book or Pages?

Your slowdown might be between Address Book and Mail/Adium which both have the option to sync contacts w/each other.

The slowdown is Eclipse and Firefox. Both are total whores. Yes, I use them together. Some stuff I can close, but I'm often paging between all of these. Its how I work.

Thus the desire to not have Mail.app open.

Dude, I think you've got some permissions errors or something.

My dual G5 tower is routinely running:

    Photoshop
    InDesign
    Illustrator
    Quark
    FreeHand
    Acrobat Pro
    Font Reserve
    Safari
    Mail
    Activity Monitor
    iTunes
    and my Nexus RIP client

Mail doesn't use resources until it has to.

Permissions errors? No. I have a full blown database system, a web server, an enormous integrated development environment, etc. running. I use more memory than you. Deal with it.

    I can't. Its maxed.

Right now I was measuring/laying out a UI in photoshop, editing XML in dreameaver, code in Eclipse, referencing pages files and an excel file, adium is running, firefox is whoring, and preview has 5 documents open for my review. My shit slowed down.

Can you switch to another web browser instead of FF?

No, because I have to use something people actually use, or my application development time will be hugely extended. Whats more, firefox has teh BEST AJAX development tools for it.

As it stands I have to port my JS to IE, which can be hard. Having to port to Firefox and IE... no thanks.

    5725 Mail 1.1% 0:10.70 9 182 347 14.8M 22.2M+ 28.9M 391M

Thats not an insignificant use of resources.

Look... it somehow bothers me to have my email open, okay? Its not just resources. It distracts me.
