I am not a pro, this is my hobby. How am I doing?

Welcome to Grays Harbor County, the most depressed county in Washington State, this is where I live. These are part of a project I'm working on as a collection of the harbor's good and bad sides. The pictures I'm posting today were taken mostly in Aberdeen with maybe a couple from Hoquiam.

1: Grays Harbor is the home to The Hawaiian Chieftain shown here.

2: On this day, 20 men are fishing behind Wal-Mart. Many are homeless and walk for miles to get here.

4: In the background are two Weyerhauser mills that recently closed.

16: This is significant because our economy is built on the logging and paper industry which has been declining for years. Several Weyerhaeuser mills have shut down over the last couple years leaving hundreds of people out of jobs.

22: "DO NOT ENTER UNSAFE TO OCCUPY" I went to college with a girl who lived here while it was in this condition. The apartments were a whopping $150-200 per month until they recently got shut down.

24: The heart of Downtown Aberdeen is very depressed and littered with abandoned and collapsing old buildings. This theater was recently purchased by a very rich investor who is from Aberdeen. He wanted to give back to the town and remodeled this theater which had been closed for decades. Also, the gravel in the bottom of the photo is the site of a business that just burnt down a couple weeks ago, one of the founding companies on the harbor.

25: Some very old remnants of a mill that used to be on the water. Almost nothing left of its foundation now.

The ship/water pictures look neat, but I'm really interested in the graffiti/building pictures. They make me wonder what their stories are.

I'm not sure about the graffiti, I wouldn't be surprised if it was a project endorsed by the city because it is all the way up and down some of the alleys and exactly a certain height. Aberdeen has also hired a lot of strange arists to do some disturbing statues and what-not.

The murals on buildings are extremely old, there are a ton of them all over town. Pretty much every older building had one, some have literally fallen off as buildings deteriorate into nothing. Lots of awesome murals (like 5 stories high) have been lost that way.

I think this set shows more of the "bad" side than the good side, because after seeing this, I would not wnat to live there!
