Two Houston police detectives shot a Humble man who had rammed them with his car after the officers caught him burglarizing their unmarked car during the lunch hour today at Deer Brook Mall in Humble, authorities said.

The suspect, Edward Thomas, 20, was taken to Ben Taub Hospital in Houston where he is undergoing surgery for bullet wounds to his head, shoulder and side. Thomas is expected to survive, said Humble Police Lgt. T. Q. Sammon.

Humble police investigaor Craig Miller said Thomas had been arrested for burglaries of motor vehicles in the past in the Humble area. Police could not yet say if Thomas was armed.

Only one of the two detectives, T.D. Butler, 34, was transported to a hospital after being struck by Thomas' Gray Chevrolet Malibu, Sammon said. Butler, a 12-year veteran with the Houston police department, was taken to Memorial Hermann Northeast for treatment of injuries to his knee and hip.

Both Butler and the other detective, M.W. Hamby, 47 and a 26-year veteran, had never fired their weapon at anyone before this incident, authorities said.

According to invesigators, the two detectives had gone to the Humble to take statements from a suspect for another investigation and then afterwards gone to lunch at the Asian City Chinese-Japanese Restaurant located in the mall's parking lot.

When the detectives left the restaurant, they said they saw a suspect burglarzing their unmarked vehicle. Butler was wearing his jacket that said "police" while Hamby had his gun and badge but dressed in plainclothes, authorities.

The detectives identified themselves and ordered Thomas to surrender. But he jumped into his car instead and stepped on the accelerator and drove right at them, investigators said.

Both detectives uloaded their weapons. Thomas' car had three bullet holes in the windshield and two each in both doors.

In addition, investigators discovered a third vehicle, a silver Grand Prix, had been burgalarized nearby.

After an attempt to jimmy its lock had failed, the Grand Prix's windshield had been smashed and a leather briefcase taken. The briefcase was recovered from Thomas' car along with a screw driver that had been used to break into the vehicles.

More than a dozen tags marked evidence, from shell casings to glass, in the mall's crowded parking lot from this broad daylight incident.

No charges had been filed and the case remained under investigation as police continued to interview witnesses.

More details apparently someone on arfcom knows one of the officers this is from email arfcom member got

The cops will be cleared of all charges. The kid will go to jail for burglary, resisting arrest, attempted homicide, assault with a deadly weapon (car), etc. He will spend the rest of his life in prison with a fucked up face, blind in one eye, and a bunch of scars. :big grin:

  14. This is why cops should carry the 10mm. If they want to complain about the recoil they shouldn't be cops.
