Horse shot on farm on first day of deer season
    December 1, 2008 - 4:42pm

WOLFSVILLE, Md. - Police say they have no suspects in the fatal shooting of a horse on the first day of Maryland's firearm deer season.

Natural Resources Police Sgt. Ken Turner said Monday that the 12-year-old horse was found shot in the abdomen Saturday on a farm in the Wolfsville area about 10 miles northwest of Frederick.

Landowner Vernon Stottlemyer says the horse, named Prince, belonged to his sister-in-law.

Stottlemyer says he suspects a hunter mistook the animal for a deer.

    Easy mistake to make :hsughno:

My property backs up to woods, absolutely LOADED with deer... even though my property is wired with Invisible Fence, I make sure my Dobie twin brothers aren't outside for too long during hunting season.

The deer are so thick around here; 2 nights ago, I had to wait for a dozen of them to get out of my way, so I could proceed down my driveway.
My front yard is Grand Central Station for deer. I love venison, but I don't hunt.

    It's not.

But just because stupid hunters don't take the time to properly identify their target, we leave our horses in during gun season

We move all of our horses from our remote farms, nearer to the house, and put many inside during deer season. Stuff like this isn't uncommon, and you'd be surprised what some idiots will shoot at.

This is why I wear a liberal amount of blaze orange even if I am hunting private land that I am supposed to be alone on. Goddamn, people are fucking retarded. A horse is what, 3 times the size of a deer at the very least.

I can't imagine being the hunter that shot the horse. "Oh man, this is the biggest deer ever!!!"

Don't forget to factor in that people are just assholes too. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if someone shot the horse just to shoot it; there was a rumor that a kid around here shot a cow during bow season to see if he could kill it :ugh:

Jesus Christ. I'd have a hard time not shooting that kid myself after hearing something like that. I shot one of our cows with an air rifle when I was little and my dad beat the absolute piss out of me and explained how much money was wrapped up in one. I never did that shit again.

To be honest, I've never seen a horn. It's always does' and yearlings... very often, still in spots.

Like a parade of veal...

Nothing cool. I just shot it in the ass, and there wasn't any penetration (Which I was hoping for. Was smart enough not to hit it with my 22). Cow just moo'd and ran off.

My dad witnessed the whole thing posted up inside the barn, and I was unaware. Sneaky bastard he is.
