I just reformatted my computer and reinstalled a fresh copy of everything. I have a 9800 Pro with the newest Catalyst drivers (5.2) and I'm getting around 37 FPS. In the past I usually got around 80 FPS but now it's barely playable. Any ideas as to what could be causing this?

Do you have your system's chipset drivers loaded on? Without AGP support, your system will be slow as balls for 3D, usually about 30% slower for demanding stuff.

I'll have to check I have a ASUS P4P800E Deluxe MB, would the chipset drivers be on a disc that came with it?

Yes, they would be...But that model uses an Intel 865PE chipset, and it would be a good idea to download new drivers from Intel.

Personally I use nVidia chipsets. I find them to be quite stable and fast, and have a premium of features.

Would be downloading the newest drivers require me to reformat again?

Not at all...but you may have to reinstall your ATi drivers, if "AGP Texture Acceleration" is disable in The DirectX Diagnostic Utility.

    Start -> Run -> dxdiag

    EDIT: Nice board.

On Intel's site which one is the correct one to download? There are a few ending with 865PE.

    Wow...that's weird...I just went there.

Just use the stuff on your CD...The platform drivers seem non-existant there.

You could also use Asus' website.

Yeah that's what I'm checking now, the MB comes with a program called Easy Update I believe. I'll have to check that out, I had no problems with this before so I might just go ahead and install the drivers on the disc an leave it be. Thanks for your help.

Alright a little update I installed the drivers off the mobo CD, unistalled HL2, and installed UT2004. I have 0 problems running UT2004 smooth as can be and looks great. So I go ahead and reinstall HL2, do all the updates and defrag the hdd and it still runs like shit. I ran the video stress test in CS:S and I'm getting like 33.87 FPS :wtc: I also noticed when I had HL2 DM open that the floor and walls had a bright purple color to them in some spots. WTF is going on? Could it be my 9800 Pro drivers? I'm running the newest ones, any ideas :hs:

Is that to improve my frame rates or for the purple?

Oh, that improves your FPS drastically.

EDIT: Your card may have bad RAM...

Update again after trying everything I could think of, I finally just decided to give a set of different drivers a shot. So I went back to the 4.12's and I'm back in business around 77.45 FPS :) Anyway thanks for your help all along, I'm very relieved that it wasn't a problem with my card.

    That's odd. I'm running the 5.2's without a hitch.

Something probably happened when I installed them, I may go back some time but right now I'm just sticking with what works.
