    IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT
ATF DECIDES THE AKINS ACCELERATOR™ TO BE A MACHINEGUN

Akins Group Inc. regrets to announce that the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) has reversed its position and has decided the Akins Accelerator™ to be a machinegun conversion kit, thereby subjecting it to strict regulation under the Gun Control Act (GCA) and National Firearms Act (NFA).

ATF rescinded its previous determination that the Akins Accelerator™ was not subject to the GCA or NFA (see http://www.firefaster.com/documentation.html). Attorneys for the Akins Group Inc. are seeking reconsideration by ATF of its new position. In the interim, any sale, transfer, or return of the Akins Accelerator™ must be suspended. Akins Group Inc. will advise further after meeting with ATF.

Akins Group Inc. has received no instruction as to the disposition of units in customer hands. Please refrain from public speculation and emotional responses and allow our Attorneys to advocate for everyone's best interests.

sadly, a lot of people saw this coming. It's not the first time the ATF decided after the fact that something has (at their whim) become a machinegun.

I would have liked to get one. I wonder how many people will try to hang on to theirs by saying it was sold via "private party"

It looked pretty cool but no way would I of paid that price for it, had it been $400ish or less i would of been tempted.

I'm sure a few will be lost in boating accidents.

:dunno: ATF will probably want to collect them all. They'll probably confiscate the manafactuers records and send letters out to everyone that they have to be turned in.

I'm assuming without any kind of reimburssment? I don't understand how they can say "Sure, they're legal to own." People buy them, then they come back with, "They're now illegal, if you spent the money you're sol because it's not our fault."

ATF will say its not there responsibility to reimburse, back in the early 90's a bunch of Maadi's came in with the 3rd hole, they send out letters for them to be turned in w/o compensation. (still some out there I know someone who had one)

Don't think NFA laws would apply to resverations, if tribal laws allow it would probably be ok :dunno:

I like how most's attitude is "I saw it coming" and not outrage that the .gov belonging to most of us can screw the American inventor like this. On the government's word, hundreds of thousands of dollars were invested. Then the .gov said, "oh, wait, we changed our minds." What if they did that to something you invented? Would you be so trite then? If you can't trust the regulator, how can you possibly hope to do business in this country?

There was quite the weasel clause in the final letter here - namely that:
This evaluation is valid provided that when the stock is assembled with an otherwise modified SKS semiautomatic rifle, the rifle does not discharge more than one shot by a single function of the trigger
The original prototype that was sent to the ATF malfunctioned after one shot and none of the correspondence cleary states that a device which facilitates rapid "bump firing" would be acceptable. I also suspect that while the technocrats saw this as a novel way around the law, the agency's equivalent upper management saw it differently.

Government constantly seeks to expand itself and justify its existence. Bait and switch tactics by regulators provide just such a mechanism to expand the authority (and budget) of any given agency.
