When Ahwatukee Ryan Altieri heard knocking at the door of his quiet townhouse Monday evening he thought it might be a salesman.

Turns out it wasn't anything nearly as innocent.

At about 6:45, two men kicked in the door at Altieri's townhouse on Piedmont Road, near Guadalupe and 48th Street. Instead of an empty home, however, the intruders came face to face with Altieri - holding a cellphone and a rifle.

"I was in the bathroom when I thought I heard a knock," Altieri said. "They knocked for about three minutes, I guess trying to make sure nobody was home, then they started kicking the door in. So I got my cellphone and went into my bedroom and loaded my rifle."

Altieri, 27, said he was on the phone with the 911 operator when two intruders burst through the door. The intruders walked in on Altieri kneeling with his rifle trained on them and the cellphone at his ear.

"They saw me and started stuttering," Altieri said. "I said, 'One more step and you're done.'"

The men ran away, leaving their car behind. One suspect, a 17-year-old, was caught soon afterward. Police are still looking for the second intruder, a man believed to be in his 30s, according to Phoenix police Sgt. Leonard Pinuelas. Nothing was taken from the home.

Altieri said he has lived in the condo for about a year. He lives toward the rear of the complex, near Guadalupe Road and 48th Street, and described it as quiet.

He said he was surprised that anyone would try to break in at that time of day.

Altieri said that while he was glad he had his rifle to protect himself, he had hoped he didn't have to shoot the intruders.

"But you don't know what the hell is behind that door," he said.

He had to load his rifle? He is lucky that he had a 3 minute head start. Always keep that shit loaded son!

rifles usually aren't the best weapon of choice for home protection. that said, i need to buy a concealable handgun

I agree. Maybe he is just a hunter and that is all he has in his house? It obviously scared the shit out of the intruders. :)

If you are looking for home defense get a tactical shotgun. Racking a shell is loud enough to make most run away. :noes:

    I know I would. :noes:

Not to mention a shotgun won't penetrate walls and it will blast an intruder to pieces. It will make a mess and you won't kill your chidren who may be in a different room.

Shotgun > * when it comes to home defense.

Any kind of quality defensive load that you're using in a shotgun is going to go through dry wall.

I wonder if Myth-busters would take on the case? Form a bust of whatever materials would best replicate a human chest, then fire 3" 00 magnum buckshot through it and see if it'd penetrate drywall a foot behind it.

    Hmmm....

The vision I had was a dude storming down the hallway and coming after me in my bedroom. If I can't hit a dude running towards me in a 3' wide hallway then I should sell all my guns.

all i have are rifles too. don't get me wrong, if someone was kicking down my door, i'd grab one of them too. they are definitely better then nothing at all. but if i was shopping for home defense, i wouldn't go to a gun shop and look at rifles. thats what i'm saying.

Same here, but that won't be till September :x: I'm currently jobless and not looking until school starts. I could afford the gun now, but it's between that and my HCP. I choose HCP.

Plus since I'm not a us citizen I have to live at the same address for 3 months before I can purchase a firearm. That was fine for my glock because I lived at home for 21 years, but I now live on my own in a different state. September will be three months and also when I get a job. Works out well.
