A&P Homemade bounce card & diffuser for my XT...

Discussion in 'Lifestyle' started by coughlin's law, Mar 19, 2008.

  1. So I can't readily buy a 430ex or 580ex just yet (funds) so I became frustrated and decided to make one of my own. This is using the internal flash on my Rebel XT.

    Here's what I used;

    I held the card together, then pinched the bag -- but I can get a staple and tape for that at work :o

    [IMG]

    Then testing, in my messy, messy room:

    With Flash:

    With Bounce and Diffuser:

    I know I know, it's cheap and bad subjects, but I hope it can hold me over until I get a flash :x:

    Not trying to threadjack, but this may be of interest to anyone that is willing to go through the trouble of making their onboard flash 'better'.

    Has anyone seen (or cared about) the new pop-up flash diffuser from Gary Fong? He is marketing "The Puffer" for $25

    Best part is that the chinese knock-offs have already hit ebay. You can have your own 'genuine imitation puffer' for about $7 shipped.

    you mean, incorrect white balance....

    you're confused. Just because you have a light on in the room doesn't mean you need to set your WB to match that light. IF you flash is completely overpowering all ambient light, you need to adjust your WB for the flash, and not worry about the ambient. IF you are mixing the ambient and the flash, you need to gel your flash to match the color temp of the ambient light to get true, correct WB across the board. If you are mixing ambient, and flash, but don't gel your flash to match the color temp of the ambient, you'll never get correct WB, especially when using the pre-canned WB settings.

    Pop-up has salvaged a few photos when I didn't have my 430EX...

    That being said, pop-up still blows. Use it as little as possible.

    why not just select the white balance too, then click on an object that is white?

    bang. Instant white balance!

    If he's completely overpowering the ambient light that will work fine(which it looks like he is in this pic)... and in most cases even if there is still some ambient coming through, as long as the main subject has correct WB it won't be as big of an issue.
