I set my mom up a new computer. The old one still has a lot of files, pictures, mp3's on the hard drive. Is there a way I can set up the old box on the network as a server with 3 or 4 hard drives in it that can be accessed without having to swap all this over on to the new computer?

Also is there a way I can do this and still access it from the internet so I can still access stuff from my apt?

So I will have to install windows on the extra computer? Or is there a quick bootable linux I can use off a CD and just let this thing run in a closet somewhere? And will I still be able to access those files from my computer at my apartment?

yes linux could be used with SAMBA.

However, you might as well use a router as a vpn endpoint and then no extra computer is needed.

my point is you don't have to use the box for that if you don't want.
