so, I made a beauty dish... The wife is asleep, so I couldn't get her to test it out so I had to use my ugly mug. Excuse the mess... and I know the bottle is OOF.... how's the lighting?

a beauty dish. it's a light difuser. Gives off nice soft even lighting in portraits.

it's also called a pan reflector. They go for about 200 bucks... i made this out of a 4.99 mixing bowl, some flat white paint, a tupperware container, some tin foil, some velcro and a couple of hinges. I probably have less than $15 invested.

I was going to write one up, but I didn't. It's pretty easy. Just buy a large mixing bowl, cut a hole out in the bottom a little larger than your flash head, find a tupperware container that fits in there nicely and either use tin foil on the lid, or a mirror (to bounce the light, it spreads out better that way and keeps light from coming thru the lid) cut the same hole in the bottom of the container. Then you just have to put it together and find a way to mount it.... I used two door hinges and velcro so I could remove it from the flash head easy....

lol! i have always wondered if you could get a dish for speedlites :big grin:

Are the hinges just there so that you can velcro it to the flash head? Is it heavy enough to damage the tilt mechanism?

no, it's not very heavy at all. I'd say it's barely over 1lb.

    here's the hinges/velcro

both of my speedlites (430ez and the sb-24) have velcro wrapped around the head to attach different diffusers I've made. I'm heading to the big electronics liquidation place in dayton (mendlesons) next weekend to start looking for parts for a new idea on some homebrew lighting.

:hs: if I mention that the flash is the only light source, does it make a difference? with my settings no ambient light showed up at all.

    I know...

and I don't care for the lightspere.. its 100% marketing. I can get the same results and not spend more than 10 bucks.
