Does anyone actually have these Bowflex, etc, etc machines? Not really any good gyms in the area, anyone know how effective they are, or which ones are good?

all you need is squat rack, barbell, and rubberized plates, and a bench

    dont even consider a bowflex

    Bowflex's are pieces of shit...

If you are looking at a home gym, and not wanting free weights/bars, look at hoist fitness gyms....hoistfitness.com

The V-5 is their best gym, amazing design and feel and replicates the feel of dumbells in a much smaller footprint

i'd imagine that bowflexes don't strengthen your stabilizing muscles too much. i wouldn't say they're worthless, it depends on your goals. it definitely isn't for strength, but it's probably good for aesthetics if that's all you care about. i'm guessing they're also pretty compact and cheap. if not, then it does sound like crap.

Well my step dad actually is thinking about getting one since he would rather not bother with the trip to a gym a few times a week. I'd also like to use it for my own purposes. Would any of these home gyms suffice? It is looking like a certainty that he'll buy one, just don't know which.

    I have this: http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=5280822

It's a pretty cool setup, the bench and uprights are two separate pieces so moving the bench to do squats is really cool. There are some 'safety catches' on the uprights, haven't have to use them ... yet ... they might come in handy. The storage thing they give you for the plates is a joke, I'll need a separate plate tower or something. I wish the connection point for the leg/preacher attachment was a quick disconnect like height adjustment for the uprights ... I don't like the leg attachment being on there ALL the time other than that it's cool. Also the leg attachment only holds 6 plates, I hit 120lbs in my leg curls and leg ext (4:25 2:10) pretty quickly.

The only way I would consider a bowflex is if you live in a second floor apartment, and there isn't a gym within 30 miles of your house.

I had one in my house, and never used it. I drove to the gym instead. When I moved, I gave the thing away to a friend.
