    Brolys and Brolettes,

My wife and I literally have no time to go to the gym. We are considering purchasing one piece of quality equipment to use to lose fat. At the moment, we are considering an elliptical.

We are looking to spend ~$1300 on this piece of equipment. Would an elliptical trainer be the best thing we could do for a half hour or so a day to lose fat. We would later look into purchasing weights and such, but for the moment the goal is to lose weight first.

I looked through the archives, and through about 10 pages in the main forum, and really didnt see as pointed a question as this for a home gym setup. Any help would be appreciated, or if the question is too silly for you, just post a gtfo n00b :p

    Thanks oT!

Losing weight is about calories in < calories out blah blah blah.
I think weight training would be more beneficial if you will allow yourself to learn how to lift.

    Power rack
    Flat Bench
    300lb of olympic plates+bar
    Floor Mats

    =~$500

Learn how to Bench press, squat, deadlift. Find a solid routine you can do just based off these lifts 3x a week roughly 30-45 minutes a day and I guarantee you will burn a lot more calories than straight cardio.

imho cardio requires no fancy thousand dollar machines. GO OUTSIDE AND RUN!

But what about running/walking type workouts for breaking a good sweat and getting the heart rate up there? No good? :dunno:

The problem is, the weather in Minnesota sucks too many days out of the week to do this. 8 month winters don't help the cause either :)

That seems to be the general consensus around this forum. Maybe I should just plunk down half the cash on weights/mats and such, and set them up in the garage (I live in a townhome).

suck it up and run in the rain/snow. buy a sled from elitefts.com and drag that shit in any weather. weather is not an excuse to stay inside and do nothing.

You folks basically have me sold on this idea, but i dont see how im going to lose weight doing this. I just see myself getting muscular and broly, and maybe staying at the same weight, just more muscle than fat.

loosing the fat is all about diet, and has little to do with cardio. Exercise in the form of liftign weights is superior to doing cardio.

You can do barbell complexes, running, jumping rope, buttseks, etc instead of cardio.

What they all said.. and maybe add the elliptical on top of it if you want the cardio machine.

The fact that it will be cheaper than getting a *decent* treadmill/elliptical helps too. There is a guy who is a couple of townhomes over that has his weight set up in his garage, and keeps a almost daily schedule of working out. I'd rather keep some of the cash anyways so I will certainly look into the suggestions in this thread so far seriously :)

I just have to convince my wife now that this is the direction to head in, rather than a "machine".

you can also think of it a little more imperically, what do you think will make you more fit/stronger/loose fat some stupid machine you piddle on for 20 minutes, or 45 minutes of bustign your ass in the gym.
