we've had a string of armed break ins in my area so i figured my shotgun would be best for self defense (over my AR15 or .22s). I went out and picked up some #1 buckshot shells b/c all i had was #9 birdshot. I was about to pick up some sabot slugs, but i figured 16 buckshot pellets > 1 slug. i have no idea about shotguns, or the shells. would these be sufficient for home defense?

I think that would make a fine defense round. I have my shotgun loaded with: 1st round 3" Magnum 000 buck, all the subsequent rounds are 3" Magnum slugs. But I don't think anyone will survive the massive blast from the 000 buckshot.

Be sure of your target. but you made a good choice.

Slugs will definitely make a big wound, but your sending an awfully heavy bullet downrange at high speed.
Good for swiss cheese, bad for anyone on the other side of the wall.

    Stick with the buck.

yea, i was worried about penetration. i figured it would be better to shoot once with buckshot and get the job done than send 5 .223 rounds flying through my house.

i mean, would it go through multiple walls and go out of my house? i don't care if it breaks stuff inside, but i wouldn't want it to go into the neighbor's place.

Most ammo from any defensive caliber will go through sheetrock. The stuff just isn't good at stopping bullets.

Just be sure of your backstop.
