These three seem to be the most popular recommendations I always hear for home defense. Here are pics of them. What do you keep loaded in your shotgun?

This is 000 buckshot at 15 yards.

This is #4 buckshot at 15 yards.

Most people actually feel #1 is the sweet spot. I'd go with nothing less than 4, and personally wouldn't use #4. I use 00 since its readily available in low recoil form. Buy a few different brands of 00, take a shot at a target with each brand and see which one produces the tightest pattern from your gun, and buy a few hundred rounds.

I've never shot a slug before. Come to think of it, I've never shot a 3" magnum either. How big a difference is there between a 2 3/4" 00 shell vs. a slug?

I'll try that. I didn't know they made low recoil 00 shells. Who is the manufacturer?

And how much do you guys pay for your ammo? I pay almost $5 after tax for 5 shells. :dunno:

Slugs kick good. 3in magnums kick hard in a Mossburg 835 (light gun). But id use 00 judging from those targets.

Slugs got a nice kick to them, I think winchester or federal has low recoil, I haven't bought any shells in a long ass time last I bought was like $4 a box.

Alot of companies make low recoil 00 buck actually. I'm using the federal rounds from http://www.ammoman.com/
    $150 for 250 rounds shipped.

 Both sound like good deals. I'll buy a couple of boxes of each locally and see what the grouping is like.

low recoil 00 buck, still has the kick to get the job done, but won't break the shoulder or hand after repeated shooting

Maybe it's a good idea to have it loaded with #4 and have 00 on the sidesaddle? I can then load a 00 shell when I know for certain there is nothing beyond the target I have to watch out for. :dunno:

I wish there was a site out there that did penetration tests on drywall with these different shot sizes. :hs:

If its good enough to do in the bad guy, it'd dangerous to be on the other side of the wall from. If its safe to be on the other side of the wall, its safe to be the bad guy ;)

What size shot gun were those pics taken? When I shoot 00buck out of my 870 Marine Magnum I think they are way more spread out than that.

 Thank you! It's interesting to see that pretty much all defense loads are going to penetrate atleast 6 layers of sheet rock. I guess there's no use is really worrying since after 2 sheets (a standard wall), whoever's on the other side is going to get hit regardless. These two parts really stood out to me:

I believe it is the choke tube that caused the tight spread. I got the pics from here -

    http://www.wadwizard.com/SWATBuckshot.htm

I couldn't find any other comparison shots.

I keep 00 buck in mine. Right now I have Federal Tactical 00 buck loaded. I also have a sleeve of PMC low recoil, and a box of Ranger 00 low recoil. I need to get out and pattern them.

Yea I was just thinking it had to be choked cuz my 18inch barrel doesn't have tight groups like that at 10 yards.

I have mine loaded with 6 rounds of 00 buckshot and the last round is a slug. No real reasoning, just what I had lying around.

Ugly as sin, but the Steyr is pretty enough for both of them.
