Hey, I haven't built my own system since 98-99...gimmie some pointers.

    Athlon or p4
    1GB(+) RAM
    I only need 128 Graphics.
    I was thinking 2 drives; 1 20-30G(OS) 1 100-200G(MUSIC)
    tcp/ip
    plenty of usb(firewire) support
don't care about a fancy case
    Primo sound support, Possibly speakers
    ~$800

Any sites besides NewEgg I should look at?
Maybe start with a barebones system?

I don't necessarily want someone to put components together for me....just looking for the best and quickest way to get some config's together.

smallest drive you'll find new is a 40GB, btw.

    don't start barebones... bad idea!

    I say:

    MSI K8T-Neo $80-140 http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproductdesc.asp?description=13-130-449&DEPA=0

    AMD Sempron 3100+ $130 http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=19-104-214&depa=0

    Corsair 1GB PC-3200 DDR $160 http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=20-145-480&depa=0

    nVidia GeForceFX 5200 $55 http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-139-165&depa=0

    Western Digital 40GB 7200RPM 8MB Buffer $56 http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=22-144-126&depa=1

    Seagate 200GB 7200RPM 8MB Buffer SATA $117 http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=22-148-033&depa=1

    Creative SoundBlaster Live 7.1 $30 http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=29-102-176&depa=1

    Antec case w/PSU $65 http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproductdesc.asp?description=11-129-148&DEPA=1

    Sony 52x/32x/52x/16x CD-RW/DVD-ROM $39 http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=27-106-819&depa=1

Do NOT cheap out on the PSU. I hate antec, but I'd rather see you getting an antec case w/antec PSU (cost-effective) than some generic POS so-called "400watt" unit.

If you're a big gamer then you'll definitely want a better vid card, tho.

I wasn't sure about barebones.....I thought those systems would have evolved more quickly.

    That's a great start.....thanks man.

I don't do any gaming on the PC...:hs: Except for poker.

I usually stick with AMD due to the cost (I'm poor).
I'd go with a gig of RAM. 512MB is acceptable for general use...just net surfing and word processing, etc.
If you're looking for a small, fast drive for app access, take a look at the WD Raptor.

    I wouldn't go with the socket 754.

people say that, but for a budget system it's an awsome deal... socket 939 has boards that aroud 2x as much... same with chips.
