Last wednesday I went to the gym and everything seemed fine, thursday out of nowhere I had a really sharp pain in my back, it was like to the left of the middle of my spine and it was REALLY sharp for about a good 2-3 minutes, and then there was just pain there the rest of the day. So I figured I'd take friday off then go sunday. I go today, during my squat, on my second rep, it kicked in again, but it was REALLY REALLY bad. I could barely breathe that's how much it was hurting. I tried to skip squats and do something else, but I could barely walk, let alone lift. Now it seems that the pain has shifted to my actual spine, and it hurts really bad. I took some vicodin but it doesn't seem to be doing much of anything. The pain is like right in the middle, I can't go see a doctor until tomorrow, but does anyone have any ideas at all of what this shit is. I go to the gym religiously so any time away is really pissing me off.

Yeah I figured. I'm gonna go see a doctor tomorrow. I just hope it's not a slipped disk or something permanent.

it could be a disc or it might just be a strained muscle impinging a nerve

i got some pretty sharp pains doing deadlifts awhile ago. i was all fine and until i saw someones reflection in like this dull metal wall thing walking up to me, so mid lift i twist just a bit to see who it was and jacked my form just enough to hurt my back. it hurt pretty bad for a few days, i stopped lifting that day and avoided back execises for hte next week or two and after that i was all better =D

seriously, if you hurt your back wait a bit and avoid things that could potentially hurt it again for a few weeks and it'll usually go away. if not, see a doctor.

also, when you start doing back things again, pay close attention to form so that you dont' do it again.

Well considering none of us are Doctors (as in MD's), or have X-Ray internet vision, all we can say is go see the doctor.

    Did you expect something else?

i think i'm in the exact same position as you. except it's about an inch to the left of my spine right above my ass. it hurts to walk on my left leg, bend over, sit, stand, basically put any pressure on my back

i wound up having to cancel my appointment, so i'm going to try to see the doc tomorrow :sad2:

ya, i've fubared my back to where i was the same. waiting it out and letting my back recover worked for me. although i'm not saying DON'T go see a doctor, that's obviously never a bad idea when you injure yourself.

as for my pain, it was somewhat disabling for a bit but it didn't feel as if anything had shifted or was out of place, it was just a sharp pain for awhile. if i had any reason to think i did anything more than strain something i would have for sure went to the doctor.

I'm 17, no history of backpain until very recently. This sharp pain happened in a different location on my back, but I just worked out anyway, now it's worse and in a different location. The pain died down a lot from when I made this thread. I can actually move and bend over and stuff, but there's still some pain. Hopefully that means it's nothing permanent.

Does the pain stay in your lower back or do you sometime feel the sharp pain in your glute/hamstring? Walk on your heels for about 10 feet, then turn around and walk on your toes for 10 feet. If you feel no pain at all then it is most likely not any serious nerve damage. You probably just strained muscle tissue in your back.

same exact thing happend to me. I was doing DB shrugs and all of the sudden it was like I was being stabbed in the back. I never went to the doctor, and generally the inverse of my actions is the correct one, so I'd go see what he says.
