I started jumping rope Monday...600 skips each on Monday and Tuesday. I was going to go for another 600 today, but when I woke up my calves were so sore I could barely walk!

Should I try to tough it out and do some more today, stretching before and after - or should I skip (no pun intended) the jumprope today? I neglected to stretch the last two days.

I would go ahead and do it again, but maybe not so much or for so long. When I'm sore from running I still run. :dunno:

hrmm, interesting. i wonder why it is commonly taught that stretching is used for soreness prevention if that's not the case. even in my fitness for life class .. i feel cheated :wtc:

i'm not being sarcastic either :)

Stretching is to "warm up" the muscles so that way they're not shocked by a large amount of weight or activity suddenly and thus causing injury.. Also stretching is for the reverse, to cool down.

So I guess in a way, stretching does help prevent soreness, in that it helps prevent injury and pulled muscles, etc.

i jump rope 50X50 almost everyday with 30 pounds attached to me, if you are really sore i would say skip a day, but your calves will get used to it in time..

I remember hearing about a study done by the US Army about stretching, and it said stretching before strenuous exercise did not prevent any more injuries than not stretching. (The exercise used was the obstacle course). Anyone have any more info on this by chance?

well that's what i had always been taught, that and that stretching afterwards would help prevent lactic acid build-up which causes soreness. but i looked on google and found this:

Lactic acid build up doens't cause DOMS, it causes the burn feeling your get after a lot of reps and shit. DOMS is caused from small tears in your muscle fibers. I also don't recomend that you stretch before lifting and do warm up sets instead.

i restarted the routine like three weeks ago, so my calves aren't really that big or defined yet, but give me another two weeks or so and I'll give you some pics

I'm sore after my coach made me do 30x3 of 185 on deep squats and then 15x3 on 225 seated calf raise ...followed up by 20x3 of 225 traditional DL's...with like no rests.

    ouch.

actually when you stretch you temporarily weaken your muscles, allowing you to use less weight than you normally could

also by weakening these muscles they become more prone to injury

just do warmups, whether it is before weight lifting or other aerobic excercises
