Is there a way to trace and find out where a DSL connection is going wrong? Im downloading at ~10kb/s.

I tracert to sbcglobal.net and my pings are consistently 700+ ms. WTF. Tell me what to do to narrow the problem down, and Ill do it.

    EDIT:
Also, I dont know if it makes a difference, but im using two wired connections and two wireless connections in my home network. I can remote into my other computers no problem.

Done. They tell me their servers are fine and its not a problem in the line because they tested it.

Oh, and excuse the slow responses from me, its like 56k over here.

They can't test the line properly until they come out.

Sounds like you've got some combinations of computers/routers to play around with. Don't even start looking at the spyware and shit until you can identify the device that is causing the problem.

I think I just narrowed it down to the new dual core AMD with XP pro x64. It may not be playing nice with the network, but that seems flimsy even to me.

I one by one reconnected the comps, all is still doing well. I still think its the x64 unit.

FIXED. It was uTorrent causing massive network slowdown. Pretty sure, anyway.

Torrents? Slowing your network traffic down? Unpossible.

Not true. They can send packets to the box in front of his house and see how long they take to get feedback. That will tell them everything they need to know about the part of the line they're responsible to maintain.

On the other hand, I'm gonna guess that the guy owns a cheap router that needs to be reset from time to time. I have mine on a 24hr garden light timer and it shuts off for 15 minutes every day at 3am. Never had an issue, not a single one.

    1) Properly is the key word here. 'Nuff said
    2) Read the whole thread before responding.

I did read the whole thread before responding. He said nothing about the kind of router he has before I said something about it. As for properly testing the line, if they can ping his box and they don't get abnormally high lag and/or packet loss, then the line must be good. If they did see problems, then it could be the line or his router or their equipment in the box outside his house, but if they don't see problems then the entire system must necessarily be working correctly.

When I saw the title of the thread I thought to myself "torrents" because I'm downloading something right now, it was going like 15k/sec so I had to turn off bittorrent and all was well. Its just funny that your problem actually was a torrent program :mamoru:

That was the first thing I thought of too. Nothing freezes up a network like torrents can.
