I sat and watched the entire mini-series on DVD yesterday and I must say I was both impressed and appauled.

I don't know if the TV movie was historically acurate but I just can't get over the fact that they let Hitler rise to power so easliy.

A close friend of mine said "he gave his country something at a time they needed most; pride". I guess it was too late before they realised what evil they had created.

Politics and history aside, this was a brilliant acted film, especially on the part of Hitler, played by Robert Carlye (better known for his part in Trainspotting and Monty Python). The settings were very low budget and almost claustrophobic, but I guess for a TV movie you have to make consession for these sort of things (unless it is made by the likes of Steven Spiellberg).

    I give it 7 out of 10.

Now to read up on WWII and see where we went wrong.

    :hsd:

    2004 version > 1972 version

Bruno Ganz's portrayal in the 2004 version is bone-chilling.

    The secretary's confessions = :eek3:

Don't forget, Hitler never, ever had the majority of the votes when he was elected. At the height of Nazi power (in free elections), he had only 38%. Even when he banned the Communists and other left-leaning parties, he still managed only to get 40something% of the vote.

Hitler never had popular support. He was never in the majority. They didn't "easily" let him in power. Hindenburg and the others thought they could control and manipulate him.

Other people (besides Hitler) overthrew the Weimar Republic before he came to power. The Weimar Republic was by no means a stable government.

I could go on and on, but that'd become a history lesson, not a film review ;)
