It will not let me clear my history. If I hit the button it freezes. Basically the hourglass justs keeps spinning. If I go into the task manager is says it's not responding. I usually clear my history each day. This started happening on Friday.

Also I noticed last night that on my desktop if the computer is just sitting idle with no programs open there seems to be something running in the background or I am guessing that. My pointer turns into the hourglass every couple of seconds. I ran a virus check, nothing.

    Please help.

    Make sure you

    a) have all windows critical updates
    b) have the updates for adaware (i download them everytime i run it).
    c) lastest updates for anti-virus.

If you aren't using Norton Anti-Virus try going to www.sarc.com and running their online virus check - it takes a little while but will let you know what's up.

Also - to check to see what is running in the background use the task manager (ctrl+alt+del), processes then sort by CPU. When not using anything System Idle Process should be at the top - if something else is then check up on it.

Sometimes when I try to clear my temp Internet files, I have the same problem, but that's just becuase there is so much to delete. I have never had that problem clearing the history. Sounds like a problem though...

How about going to C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Local Settings\History and manually deleting the files?

Reduce the size of your cache for IE... If you have broadband a couple meg should be enough, dial up can use a little more. IE 5 and up is HORRIBLE at managing the cache.
