In London, Parents Bereaved by Armed Violence join the Control Arms campaign to Destroy Guns With a Huge Steamroller

Several hundred symbolic guns were destroyed in London today (July 9th) by parents from around the world who have lost their children to armed violence. The guns were pulverized by a massive steamroller as part of international Gun Destruction Day. Similar events took place across the UK in Bristol, Birmingham and Leeds.

Mick North, whose daughter Sophie was killed at Dunblane in Scotland, said:

"If parents like me who have lost children to armed violence can face the gun problem head on, why can't the government? As the second biggest arms supplier in the world Britain has a responsibility to tighten its arms laws. Every day it refuses to do so is another day British-sold arms can find their way into the hands of killers and criminals."

    Figures show that:

    * For every gun that is destroyed another 10 are manufactured
    * Around eight million new guns are made every year
There are approximately 640 million guns in circulation- one for every ten people (so how do we arm the other 9)
    * Approximately 14 billion rounds of military ammunition are made every year - two bullets for every person. (obviously not enough with current pricing)
    * Small arms are produced by 1249 companies in more than 90 countries
    * Only three countries in the world (Nigeria, Latvia and South Africa) have a policy of destroying all surplus or confiscated weapons. Most resell their old stocks onto the world arms market. :)madfawk: I want R4 and lativian ak kits)
    * On average, around one million guns are lost or stolen every year
    * Much of the 650,000 tons of arms at abandoned military depots across Iraq have been looted

The London event was a part of whole series of events to mark the fourth Global week of action against small arms. The week has so far resulted in campaigning activity in over 30 countries. Examples of other gun destruction events taking place include:

In Brazil 6,500 illegal firearms confiscated by police will be destroyed by Viva Rio, the Brazilian Army, and the Rio state government. Oscar Niemeyer, the famous Brazilian architect, will use the destroyed guns to make a monument to peace.

In South Africa gun control groups will be working with the government to publicly destroy a cache of illegal arms. This will mark the coming into force of the new firearms control act - aiming to drain the pool of arms in communities.

In Cambodia, a flame of peace ceremony will be held at which 4,000 illegal and surplus weapons will be destroyed.

For the first time, international arms campaigners joined forces with domestic gun campaigning groups - Mothers Against Guns and the Gun Control Network - to show how the unregulated international trade in arms impacts on gun crime in the UK, as well as overseas. The groups have joined forces to call on the UK government to back an international Arms Trade Treaty to place legal controls on the unregulated trade in arms that claim hundreds of thousands of lives each year. They are also calling for an end to loopholes in UK arms export laws that allow British guns to be sold to human rights abusers and conflict zones.

    Steve Walker, a retired policeman whose son was killed with an imported Uzi machine gun, said;

"An international Arms Trade Treaty would ensure all governments have strict standards and all arms exports are properly regulated. If the British government refuse to push for tough controls, they shouldn't be surprised when guns moving unregulated around world markets end up on British streets taking British lives. Tough arms controls would help make all of us safer."

Well, at least they weren't destroying real weapons. The one dude in the glasses kind of looks like Mike Ditka.

I really want my own public access show. First step would be to get a hold of all pointy sticks and make them dull!

  4. I think we should get rid of murder by making statues that resemble murderers and then run them over with a steam roller, I mean, how could that NOT work to solve our problem?

England has more gun control than any other country - what exactly are they trying to acheive? Ban double barrel shotguns and rimfire pistols?

Of course, English defence industry is serious fucking bidness.

    Limeys gotta get paid.

I don't want to hear any more this week period I spent the weekend discussing gun laws with my girls mother (at least she will now differ gun law question and concealed to me, she's flipping out because the city she lives in has over the past 3 years had about 1 murder every 3 days 70% being with a gun and most being drug and gang related.) oh and a norwegian police officer (apparently knifes have been banned at least in places) and the banning of guns and blades he thinks has made a noticeable difference. His brother lives here in the states and took the officer and his son to a gun show, scared the crap out of them (they kept harking on the plastic knives though.) I'm just sitting there as I discuss it think to myself how funny it is both me and the officers brother our permits and I know while I was talking to him I had my blade and my wheel gun on me.

I need a breather from the anti-gun nuts, I love mine and they make me feel all warm and safe or at least safer.

I was trying to dig up a little dirt on some of the quoted people and found this which I thought was kind of funny:
How short sighted does one have to be to neglect the idea that lives may be defended with firearms as well? Are the smaller, older, and weaker people unworthy of defense? This of course completely neglects the facet of protection from ones government, which I wouldn't trade all the murders in the US for.

I don't get that thinking at all.

Let's put all gun manufacturers out of business so no-one can have guns... good, bad, police or military.

    How dumb are these people?

They will not even recognise there is any legitimate need for guns.

Typical socialist nonsense: the state should have all power in a society, and it alone is responsible for the welfare of its subj... citizens.

Let them get rid of all their guns, civilian and military. It'll make it easier when we finally take them all over.

Well, hell. If the guns are so easily obtained because of lack of restrictions why couldn't they get real ones to destroy. Show us just how easy it is.

werd my friend serving over there says its hard to get anything unless you are buddy buddy with the commanding officer, something about no war trophies. Maybe civilians can walk in and pick things up.

    :wtf: REALLY?

Yep. There's a buttload of paperwork that needs to be done to bring home a war tropy. And for weapons that includes rendering them inop.

Yeah but the GIs who decide to go to the local arms market and pay a couple hundred for an AK with the happy switch, and then succeed in bringing it home are where potential problems could arise. I know for a fact that this has and does happen. I don't think the penalties are too harsh if you get caught, other than maybe dishonrable discharge.

Which means you'd never be able to legally own a firearm again. But I'm thinking you might be sarcastic with the dishonorable discharge part.
