or any other file format you'd like...
    there are 2 ways...

    Terminal Way:
    - open up terminal
    - type this in w/o quotes: "defaults write com.apple.screencapture type jpg"
    - press enter
    - type this in w/o quotes "killall SystemUIServer"
    - press enter

the first part that you type tells OSX to change your default screenshot to jpg, you can also use tif, bmp, pdf, gif, just replcae the jpg portion of it to another extention if you'd like

the second part relaunchs the user/finder so you don't have to log out and log back in for that tweak to take effect.

now when you do a screen shot, it'll be a jpg, or whatever you chose

    the other way:
    use this software: http://blog.adglobe.net/2006/11/26/shotchoice-change-screenshot-file-format-in-mac-os-x-10/

png is kinda of a lossless replacement for the gif files, it supports transparencys, small files size, and looks great...

    any real point...not really
